1. Clear the driveway and yard
Crews need space for a dumpster or trailer and material delivery. Move vehicles, patio furniture, grills and planters away from the house.
2. Protect the attic and walls
Tear-off causes vibration. Cover belongings in the attic with sheets and take down fragile items from walls and shelves.
3. Plan for pets and kids
Roofing is loud and there will be activity around the house all day. Keep pets indoors or elsewhere and keep children away from work areas.
4. Talk through the details
Confirm your shingle color, the start time, where materials will be placed and who your project manager is. Ask about gutters, vents and skylights ahead of time.
5. After the job
Walk the property with your project manager. Crews sweep with magnetic rollers, but with close to 20,000 nails on an average roof, use caution in the yard for a few weeks. Keep your warranty paperwork in a safe place.
